"Sustainability decisions can be complicated, and we must consider the alternatives and consequences in order to
make good long-term decisions that balance the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability."
Georgia-Pacific has a long history of being a sustainable company, making products that improve people's lives and
doing so in a responsible manner that balances social, environmental and economic interests.
Our biggest natural resource is a renewable one – trees. Our products are an essential part of everyday life,
providing shelter and improved hygiene. And as a company with approximately 40,000 employees, we have strong ties
to the hundreds of communities where we work and live.
Georgia-Pacific is proud of its history, but we know we can't rest on our accomplishments. We have many opportunities
for improvement. The changing demands of our customers, communities and world require an even deeper understanding
of the true costs and benefits of our products and the tradeoffs in meeting competing demands.
We recognize that sustainability means different things to different people. In this report, you can learn more about
Georgia-Pacific's approach to sustainability and its importance to our success. You also can see examples of how we
are working to incorporate sustainability into the way we do business every day.
Sustainability decisions can be complicated, and we must consider the alternatives and consequences in order to
make good long-term decisions that balance the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability.
We will remain a sustainable company into the future by creating value the way we always have -- providing products
and services that customers value more highly than available alternatives and using resources efficiently in doing so.
Our sustainability success will certainly be able to be measured by numbers – long-term profitability, a smaller
environmental footprint and significant involvement in our communities. Behind those numbers will be a company
that people want to work for, that makes products consumers want to buy, and that neighbors want to have operating
in their community.
That's the kind of sustainability we can all understand and strive for.
